Costco Complete ID Review

Costco Identity Theft Protection is not actually run by Costco. Instead Costco chooses to rebrand services provided by other companies. Previously, Costco used Identity guard to provide their identity theft protection but now use services rebranded from the company CSID who allows different businesses to choose the services they want, and then gives their partner companies the freedom to fully integrate and brand it into a customized product. In this case, Costco has branded their product Complete ID. The features for Costco identity theft protection’s Complete ID include identity monitoring, fraud detection and mitigation as well as insurance and full-service restoration.

What We Like Costco ID Protect positives

The services are clear and easy to understand, and focus on both your physical and financial safety. Their alerts let you know when a sex offender is living near you for the sake of your children. It also monitors a variety of areas off the internet for your protection including: Pay Day Loan scams, if your family’s names are being used as well as criminal records. Searches both the public and Dark Web, or the preferred communication method for thieves to sell your information. Also comes with a 1 million dollar insurance policy.

Costco is a trusted brand by many, and can afford to give customers discounts where others can’t while still providing a valuable service that cannot be done on your own. This services is definitely low cost, considering the benefits it provides. It would be extremely difficult for a general consumer to access the Dark Web to ensure their information isn’t out there — and with all the hacks and data breaches, it is likely that at least some information about you can be found there. It also offers full restoration services, which means you’ll get total care if your identity is breached. For all the steps you’ll have to take not to mention the emotions you’ll have when you’ve been violated, this may be a more valuable service then you currently realize. For the protection and insurance you get, this is definitely a cost effective way to get comprehensive identity theft protection.

What We Don’t Like Costco ID Protect negatives

Costco has to go through a middle man for any problems that may occur. While the process may speed up due to Costco’s relationship with the service provider, it may spell general delays for you when time is of the essence. The good news is that CSID looks to have been quick to respond to complaints and major problems according to the BBB information (where it sports an A+ rating.) It’s also unclear just how quickly the average time is between when something is detected and when someone is alerted.

The Bottom Line

For families and everyday consumers seeking basic protection and who already use Costco on a regular basis, this isn’t a bad way to loop services in with each other. Costco’s reputation is on the line if they can’t make good on any number of their promises, and while that isn’t a guarantee, it’s a good start over unknown brands. It should be noted that it is not recommended package if you need total protection above and beyond industry standards, however it does address and set up defenses for the most common and important threats.

How It Works

How Costco Complete ID Works

Costco has selected services they feel will be most valuable to their average shopper. Whether they’re providing rental cars, cruise packages or industrial-sized ketchup bottles, they aim to maximize every dollar spent. Here’s what you’ll be getting with your money.

Surveillance: The technology Costco Identity Protection uses works to identify when stolen information is being used online. It trolls through millions of common data points and then sends out alerts when it spots fraud.

Financial Monitoring: Consistently checks credit reports from the 3 main bureaus, and provides you with graphed scores over time so you can see how well you’re keeping up with your financial health. Also, monitors if checking, pay day loan or credit card accounts are opened with your name (or any of your family’s names.)

Non-Financial Monitoring: Thieves are not always trying to get at just your money. From alerting you of criminal activity in your name or of sex offenders that have moved to your area, you have additional support for additional threats beyond financial. It also continuously checks for other types of common fraud (mail, immigration, etc.), so you have more chances to take steps before anything does happen to your financial accounts.

24/7 Customer Support: Because the surveillance system is always working, so are the people who can help. Their specialists will help with answering questions, and assisting with the steps that need to be done if there is an incidence of fraud or even irregularity on your statements and records.

Plans & Pricing

Costco Identity Protection Plans & Pricing

Premium Identity Protection

Costco offers just one plan, but with different pricing for members. The website does a cross comparison between their plan and a ‘typical’ identity package. You’re basically getting the same features minus a few services. For example, Costco’s protection plan won’t notify you if there are large withdrawals or deposits to your checking account. It also doesn’t give you the option to opt out of pre-approved credit card offers, and the plan will only communicate through email (not phone calls or text messages.) According to the website, this plan would be about $30 a month though that seems slightly high based on industry standards. Here’s what you get with their package.

Because this their service is really rebranded from another company, there is no history or About Us page. Costco itself opened its first warehouse in 1983 in Seattle, and has become the second largest retailer in the world.

When perusing the best companies that provide this type of service, Complete ID isn’t on the list of the top 20. The only thing we have been notified about is sex offenders. We have been hacked on several occasions and had credit cards used w/o our permission. Could CostCo find a better service at a similar price?

I just signed on and get an error message when going to a screen. I called and the guy was unfamiliar with that screen or what I was seeing. That is just bad right out of the gate. I will probably pay more for someone else’s and cancel this.

Costco’s Complete ID identity protection service is a total waste of money and time. The only thing I ever got from this company was alerts for the sex offenders that moved into my neighborhood. Had my CC stolen and replaced and never got an alert fro Costco’s Complete ID. Then they changed their login page and after two calls to their customer service they could still not get me logged in. I cancelled this useless BS>

My only difficulty is in how they communicate. I get an email saying I have information to review, but have to really drill down to find it, and sometimes I never do figure out what they tell me to look at. They need to sharpen up the web page and rework their automatic communication, it’s fuzzy and vague.

Talk about fraud… Costco and CompleteID are apparently engaged in deceptive and fraudulent consumer trade practices. Just read the reviews here! They were similar to my experience, and I just called their number (accessed via the Costco.com website) to ask for information about their ID Theft Services. There are 3 abbreviated lines on the CompleteID site you are driven to by Costco, NO OTHER MEANINGFUL INFORMATION! Just instructions for you to sign up!! Costco is definitely not tending the shop here!!! Nothing like their typical Customer Service.

I would give this service a 1 rating. I’ve tried to call for 5 days straight and waited on hold for over an hour each time. All I need is to unlock my account. I have contacted my Costco Citibank Credit Card to cancel because there is no other way to prevent this service from charging me in the future.
I will not be using any of Costco’s services.

Mary’s review of Costco Complete ID

It is a gross misrepresentation to say that they offer full-service restoration. I am a victim of identity theft, and had the misfortune of trying to use their restoration services. My so-called restoration specialist never returns my calls or emails. After i had sent her a voluminous amount of information, I learned that all she can do is help me file an extended fraud alert. She could also get on the phone together with me to sort out the fraudulent charges (so how does that save me time?). It has been over a week and she has yet to file the fraud alert. Then I discover that she went on vacation, and no one else can access her system. Left a message for her supervisor, and her supervisor did not call back. I am going to put the fraud alert on myself. I have spent more time trying to get them to do something that I paid for vs. just doing it myself. Costco needs to get rid of them.

Gary’s review of Costco Complete ID

I found out my identity had been stolen. I enrolled in CompleteID thru Costco on January 7th.
I know for a fact that a new credit card was opened in my name on January 31st. As of Feb 12th I still have not received an alert.
That makes this service pretty much useless if they don’t even do the basic minimums for monitoring credit and letting you know.

Kim’s review of Costco Complete ID

2109 people found this review helpful!

We rate them “the WORST”. We signed up & our scores were up to 90 points lower than we usually have. We called & Complete ID said the scores come directly from the 3 bureaus — thankfully we signed up for Equifax.com & the scores were 823 at each bureau compared to 723, 753 & 742. Awful experience for both of us! Just glad they were wrong. Costco should shut down this crappy company.
